... and a deep and passionate relationship has begun.

Ordered from Toshcomputers in Tauranga and delivered a week later - fully unlocked and ready to go. Amazing, how easy the iPhone is to get hold of in NZ!

The phone works perfectly well with Vodafone NZ and the only limitation is the lack of visual voice mail which is an AT&T feature anyway.

My iPhone has a wonderful user interface with a great attention to detail and proves again that Apple just gets that user-centric experience totally right. It is a joy to use and the absolute best feature is the wi-fi access.

Cafenet (use the MB plan!) and other hotspots are everywhere in the city and the iPhone connects smoothly to my home and work networks. I don't need a Vodafone data plan - I just use wi-fi access and I'm online wherever I go (I just need to find a way not having to re-type my cafenet password every time I connect).

Based on an unfortunate accident where I involuntarily AT&T locked the phone again (should really keep my fingers off this command line!) I can also report that unlocking the phone yourself is a piece of cake. GUI tools to unlock the iPhone are downloadable for free and if I ordered a phone again I would not even bother to get it unlocked by someone else.

Officially there is no open API but there is a huge network of people on the internet providing add-on applications and a standard SDK seems to be evolving from the grassroots. By now the phone is practically free from any locks or limitations (would be nice if Safari could do flash though).

The iPhone really changes the entire mobile internet: (Almost) free online access at all times - I love having access to my mail, facebook, MSN/gTalk, Google maps and the web wherever I go and this is definitely the most brilliant gadget I've ever had! It's so impressive that I sometimes almost forget that it's a video iPod too :-)

Also, I can confirm the social effects Rod is blogging about: Strangers walk up to you in cafes to talk about the iPhone asking whether they would be allowed to touch it. My street cred and geek status at work have sky-rocketed.

I'm in gadget heaven and I have a new obsession ... yay! :-)
