interconnectedness

We started blogging as a way to let friends in Europe share our experiences of moving to NZ without having to send loads of emails. We now have a much wider audience and the motivation and emphasis has shifted a bit. It's interesting, this way of sending out what are often quite personal updates to a largely unknown audience.

What I've realised though, is that for all our individualism and IT-ness and the essence of moving in separate circles, there's a not-so-subtle society of Wellington bloggers whose interconnectedness is quite weird.

For example on a business level, MG blogs about something Jim said. Jim refers to Rod, who is also referred to by just about everybody, but also by Ben, who has also been known to refer to MG.  And then Lance, blogs about Rod, and also works at TradeMe with Rowan, who has blogged about MG, Jim and Rod and who chaired the Webstock debate, which involved Mike, Che, Phil, Mark and Sandy, all of whom have referred to each other.  I won't even go into the comments situation.

The social circle is not immune to the incestuousness of interconnectedness either. Wanda seems to be a much loved blogger about town, who attends parties where David also is (who I remember from university as a particularly creepy guy, small wonder he's found himself a right wing niche and enough sychophants to support his ego - the guy does 20 blog posts a day, politics fine, but Please don't write about sex!!) and often also MG.  More cross referencing from Wanda, the un-PC lesbian, and Cactus Kate - all of whom are also infatuated with Mrs Smith - which is actually cool, because she's very funny and very rich (apparently) and in Auckland, which breaks the cycle.

I particularly get the creeps from "hat tip to ..." Hat Tip?  wtf?

So is this the new social network - is this Web 2.0 in action. Is it a further online reflection of the smallness of Wellington ... does anyone ever meet up for a dinner or a drink (aside from wherever David goes).
